The Evolution of Lucid’s brand – Photography Brand Identity

First I want to apologize at how non-existent my blog posts have been of late. It’s not that I’m not busy, in fact it’s quite the opposite and I have a lot of blog posts to bring to you shortly so please keep checking back! Now, on to my post…

Finding your style as a photographer can be quite a journey. Style = how you shoot, compose and post process your images. Once you have the technical aspect down of taking a proper image it can take months or even years to really find your style and even after that it’s still an evolving process. The same is true with design. There are so many styles out there to influence and inspire how you want to design. I firmly believe that once you stop trying to have a certain style and just design (or photograph) how you feel comfortable and the way you simply love to design (or photograph) then your style will come through and will develop as you.

While in my design courses in college, I heard several times that my designs were too “static”, meaning one dimensional, not much depth visually to them. I wasn’t the type of designer that illustrated my designs with several layers. How I loved to design was simple and clean, so I struggled for a long time trying to conform to a three dimensional style and I think it showed in my work.

Last year I embraced my style of photographing and I believe the quality of my work drastically improved because of it, I was not trying to take on a style I wasn’t just because I loved that style. This year I’ve embraced my simple and clean design as my style and yet again I believe because of it, my work has improved significantly. I recently decided to re-brand my business, not only as a higher end boutique photography/design studio but also the look to reflect my style embrace.

The evolution of Lucid Design starts in 2008 when I opened up my doors as a design studio with some photography (or so my business plan was originally wrote to be).

I struggled with finding my style that first year both in my photography and in my design. In January 2009, I changed my business name to reflect that photography was now the majority of my business with some design work.

Finally, really finding my style half way through the year and never really being happy with either of my brand identity’s, as I didn’t think they truly reflected who I was, who my business was and what my style was, I decided to sit down and actually go through the process I put my clients through when branding them. I came up with a new identity this year that fits my business, my style, and how I love to design and photograph.

Collateral and marketing materials are a work in process, you know what they say about the shoe makers children, but there you have the evolution of Lucid Design & Photography, this identity is it and will be around for a long time so I hope you like it! :)
